“The Pigeon Square” is a work that actually functions as a marker reminding us of the absence of a legendary work in its true homeland – “Black Square” by Kazimir Malevich

Executed using pigeon droppings, the work recreates the square form as a gesture that is both serious and ironic. It functions as a temporary, materially radical interpretation of a well-known symbol that became the foundation of Suprematism.

In this context, The Pigeon Square touches upon the themes of cultural belonging and historical displacement, drawing attention to the complex fate of artistic heritage that often finds itself outside the boundaries of its origin. The work does not attempt to reproduce the original, but rather proposes its alternative presence — rough, bodily, and at the same time alive.

The material used here acquires additional meaning: it operates as a metaphor of appropriation, where the form is preserved but its essence is substituted. In this sense, The Pigeon Square can be read as an ironic commentary on practices of cultural appropriation and destruction — situations in which works, names, and entire layers of culture become detached from their context, and sometimes even physically destroyed.

The irony of the work lies in its temporality: it is a form of substitution that simultaneously points to absence and insists on return. The square exists here as a sign — not only artistic but also political — that captures the gap between where cultural heritage is located and where it belongs and should be.
